Carrollton and IWCS Website Issues

We received this email message yesterday regarding both our school's website and our division's website.  Please email me if you need any specific information about Carrollton.  Thanks!

Good Afternoon Everyone-

I am still working with IT to resolve the lunch menu link issue on our website. Unfortunately, we have been unable to determine why the links are not synching with the division's webpage and I am unable to update them on your individual school pages. If you all receive any inquiries or complaints from Parents please apologize for the inconvenience, let them know that it is a known issue that our IT department is working to resolve and in the interim they can view all of the lunch menus on the division's main webpage.

In case you haven't heard, the IT department is working on a complete and much needed overhaul for the division website. We are looking to moving toward a more user and content manager friendly system with a clean, concise look that allows for consistency across the board. We will be sure to keep you updated on our progress

What is WatchDOGS (Dads of Great Students)?

Just a reminder that our WatchDOGS Pizza Party Kickoff is Tuesday, October 2nd at 6PM in the CAES Cafeteria.

Background
WATCH D.O.G.S. ® (Dads Of Great Students) is an innovative father involvement, educational initiative of the National Center For Fathering. It began in 1998 in a single school in Springdale, Arkansas and has since grown into a nationally recognized program that has brought hundreds of thousands of fathers and father figures into our nation’s classrooms and hallways. WATCH D.O.G.S. ® has created millions of “in school” volunteer hours and continues to have a tremendously positive impact on the educational process. Today more than 2,276 schools in 41 states plus DC participate in WATCH D.O.G.S. ®

Program Goals
1) To provide positive male role models for the students, demonstrating by their presence that education is important.
2) To provide extra sets of eyes and ears to enhance school security and reduce bullying.

How WATCH D.O.G.S.® Works
WATCH D.O.G.S.®, a K-12 program, invites fathers, grandfathers, uncles, or other father figures to volunteer at least one day all day at their child’s/student's school during the school year. Individuals sign up at a kick-off event such as a “Dads and Kids Pizza Night” or “Donuts with Dad” or in the office at any time throughout the school year. The program is overseen by a “Top Dog” volunteer who partners with the school administrator to coordinate scheduling and identify opportunities for WatchDOGS to provide assistance at the school. WatchDOG volunteers perform a variety of tasks during their volunteer day including monitoring the school entrance, assisting with unloading and loading of buses and cars, monitoring the lunch room, or helping in the classroom with a teacher's guidance by working with small groups of students on homework, flashcards, or spelling.

3rd Grade Snakeskin

Mrs. King and Mrs. Bloodgood's class enjoyed a special treat when Ms. Willis, the student teacher, brought in an Anaconda snakeskin from Argentina.

Edible Place Value

Do you remember learning place value?  If you're like me, you likely were forced to to complete worksheet after worksheet memorizing where the ones, tens, hundreds, etc. all fell.

Well in Mrs. King's, Mrs. Smith's, and Mrs. Bloodgood's 3rd grade classes, they learned place value with food.  More specifically with cereal!  Who wouldn't LOVE having a couple of Fruit Loops while they saw the difference between thousands and millions!

CAES Remembers 9-11

Carrollton Elementary recognized the anniversary of 9-11 across the school in many different ways.  Although all of our students were not even born before September 11, 2001, all of them have been impacted by the tragedy.

First, we started our school day with an extra special moment of silence, with a reminder to thank all of our Carrollton Elementary military families who make so many personal sacrifices so that we enjoy the freedoms that America provides.

Mrs. Mann's Kindergarten class talked about the significance of 9-11 in child friendly terms and then how they are all Americans.  The class then worked on an American flag using each student's hand print.

Mrs. Day's class tied their 9-11 activities into the 1st grade citizenship unit.  They discussed how people may be different on the outside, but inside they are all Americans.  They also talked about how terrible things may happen, but Americans are known for coming together for a common cause.  They then acknowledged the students in the class who have military members or fire/police personnel in their family.  Finally they drew self-portraits of how they are all "Proud Americans".

Second grade students in Mrs. Saunders' and Mrs. Harris' class discussed how the day honored heroes and what a true hero is.  They also talked about the various memorials that have been built at the Pentagon, in New York City, and at other places to honor the memory of the victims of 9-11.

Finally, students in Mrs. King's class read the children's book, September 12th.  This book was written by students who were involved in the 9-11 tragedy.  They also discussed the military and how the military does so much to maintain America's freedom.  After all, "freedom isn't free"!  Mrs. King also brought this statue in to symbolize how many different people contributed in the aftermath of 9-11.

Other classes throughout the school commemorated 9-11 in special ways to ensure that Carrollton students understand and never forget the historical significance of 9-11.

First Day Reminders

Just some first day of school reminders:

- The doors open at 8:35.  Please do not drop your child off before 8:35.
- The school day starts at 9:05 and ends at 3:50.
- Parents will be able to walk their child to their classroom door the first day of school only.  From Day 2 on, we will have staff dedicated to ensuring that your child is getting to their classroom safely.
- Remind your child what bus they ride.  The first several days are very confusing for students but it helps tremendously if they know what bus they ride to/from school.
- The PTA is sponsoring a "Who's New" Breakfast on Tuesday at 9:05.  Come and join us!!!
