News Release about One Book/One School

This was released to all area news organizations yesterday:

CAES HELPS MAKE READING AN ACTIVITY FOR THE ENTIRE FAMILY

Isle of Wight Co., VA – April 18, 2013: On Tuesday, April 9th Carrollton Elementary launched the “One Book – One School” initiative. A representative from the Read to Them organization helped kick things off at the school’s PTA meeting. Families were invited to attend the meeting to learn more about the initiative and the generous grant received from the Education Foundation for Isle of Wight County Schools, which will allow each of the school’s families to receive the same book to read together.
The first book in the series that was selected for families to enjoy and add to their collection is The World According to Humphrey.  Students in Kindergarten through third grade were sent home with a copy of the book and a reading schedule to encourage reading a chapter together every night as both a family and a school. The book will take three weeks to read and all families are invited to the big finale on Friday, April 26 to read the final chapter together at a pajama party in the school’s cafeteria.
Here at Carrollton Elementary we pride ourselves on being a family,” said Principal Kevin Goetz.  “There are numerous benefits to reading aloud to our children, even if they are very capable of reading on their own.  They are exposed to new vocabulary, get special time with you, and learn how to be a better listener.”

Three of our students visited WLQM 101.7 in Franklin on Tuesday to talk about the One Book/One School program.

Upcoming PTA Events

The Carrollton Elementary PTA is once again showing why they are the best PTA in the area.  We've got a BUSY week chock full of some awesome events.

Tuesday is the regularly scheduled PTA meeting (2nd Tuesday of each month) in which we will roll out the One Book/One School program.  The event starts at 6 PM and includes a special appearance from a representative from the Read to Them organization and activities related to the book.  Bring the whole family and kick off the CAES One Book/One School Program!

Thanks to a VERY generous grant from the Isle of Wight Education Foundation (Education Foundation), we were able to secure the same book for EVERY SINGLE CAES FAMILY!!!

We've chosen the book, The World According to Humphrey and it will come home with your oldest CAES student on Tuesday.  We think that you'll find the book to be engaging and entertaining.  And the best part, it's the first book in a series so you can keep reading about Humphrey's adventures after we finish this first book!

You received a letter about the program just before Spring Break, but as a quick reminder, we are asking that each family take a few minutes each night and read a chapter together from the book.  I've attached the letter below:

Dear Parents,

Soon we will be embarking on a new journey as a school community.  Through the generosity of The Isle of Wight Education Foundation, Carrollton Elementary will be participating in a program called One School, One Book.  This program is sponsored by the people at readtothem.org.

What is it?  One School, One Book is a giant book club for our school.  We are all going to be reading the same book in the evenings.  Each family will get a copy and we are asking that you read this with your children each night.  We will send home a reading schedule.  There will be trivia questions in the mornings and conversations going on about the readings throughout the school.

When will it start?  We are kicking off this program the Tuesday we get back from spring break, April 9.  There will be a short assembly for the children in the morning, and you are all invited to come to school, with your kids, that same evening to learn about our new program and participate in some fun reading related activities.  A representative from readtothem.org will be here to give insight as to why reading with our children is so beneficial.  Please look for the book, The World According to Humphrey, to come home in your oldest child’s backpack on that Tuesday.  We are doing this with our Kindergarten through 3rd grade students.  Our Pre-K classes are participating in a slightly different way.

How long will this take?  The book will take approximately three weeks to read.  As mentioned earlier, there will be a reading schedule sent home with the book.  One thing to look forward to will be a big finale on Friday April 26th.  That evening we are inviting you back to school to finish the book with us at a pajama party.  Mr. Goetz and Ms. Novak will be reading the final chapter of the book in the cafeteria and we may have a special guest to congratulate our families as well.

Why are we doing this?  Here at CAES we pride ourselves on being a family.  What better way to bring us closer as a community than to share a book together?  There are numerous benefits to reading aloud to our children, even if they are very capable of reading on their own.  They are exposed to new vocabulary, get special time with you, and learn how to be a better listener, just to name a few.

We are excited to be embarking on this journey, and hope you are as well.  If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact us at school, 238-2452.  Look for your family’s copy of the book to come home on Tuesday, April 9.  We can’t wait to “read with you”.

In our house, we're going to take a break from reading with each of our children individually and make reading a whole family activity.  Everybody in the family will enjoy seeing the world from Humphrey's perspective.  This simple action of reading together reinforces to your children the importance and joy of reading.

In most schools, One Book/One School would be the highlight of the year.
Not at CAES.....
Not when it's Pizza Bingo Night on Friday!!!

On Friday, the PTA will be hosting their annual Pizza Bingo Night in the CAES Gym/Cafeteria at 6 PM.  Those of you who have come in the past know that it is an incredibly fun family event.  Pizza orders have been placed and there will be drinks and desserts available for purchase.  For more information, contact Mrs. Dempsey- dempsey@charter.net
