Isle of Wight Co., VA – April 18, 2013: On Tuesday, April 9th Carrollton Elementary launched the “One Book – One School” initiative. A representative from the Read to Them organization helped kick things off at the school’s PTA meeting. Families were invited to attend the meeting to learn more about the initiative and the generous grant received from the Education Foundation for Isle of Wight County Schools, which will allow each of the school’s families to receive the same book to read together.
The first book in the series that was selected for families to enjoy and add to their collection is The World According to Humphrey.  Students in Kindergarten through third grade were sent home with a copy of the book and a reading schedule to encourage reading a chapter together every night as both a family and a school. The book will take three weeks to read and all families are invited to the big finale on Friday, April 26 to read the final chapter together at a pajama party in the school’s cafeteria.
Here at Carrollton Elementary we pride ourselves on being a family,” said Principal Kevin Goetz.  “There are numerous benefits to reading aloud to our children, even if they are very capable of reading on their own.  They are exposed to new vocabulary, get special time with you, and learn how to be a better listener.”

Three of our students visited WLQM 101.7 in Franklin on Tuesday to talk about the One Book/One School program.
