School Safety Community Forum

Good evening Carrollton Elementary Families,

There will be a community forum at the Smithfield Center on Tuesday, January 22nd at 6:30 to discuss school safety. Currently Carrollton Elementary does not have a full-time Isle of Wight County Sheriff's Deputy in the building. We now have a law enforcement presence at arrival and dismissal. In addition, deputies are often coming into the building throughout the day.

Thank you for your support,
Kevin Goetz
Principal- Carrollton Elementary

Here is the information from the Daily Press article:

In the wake of last month's deadly shooting rampage at Sandy Hook Elementary School, Isle of Wight Public Schools is taking proactive steps to beef up safety.

On Wednesday, the division's school crisis response team met with representatives from the state police, Isle of Wight Sheriff's Office, Smithfield and Windsor police departments and county's emergency services department. They reviewed the system's crisis management plans and what schools should do if faced with an active shooter, said Kenita Bowers, school division spokeswoman.

Topics covered included the roles of teachers and administrators during a crisis, meeting places for parents, lines of communication and technology devices that can be used as additional resources. Law enforcement will participate in the schools' internal lockdown audits during drills in February and a consultant is analyzing security camera systems in all school buildings, Bowers said.

The Isle of Wight School Board is lobbying for Sheriff Mark Marshall to reassign deputies as school resource officers to the county's five elementary schools. Although he doesn't have the budget for that, Marshall said deputies will make more frequent and regular stops at schools while on patrol.

Meanwhile, the Isle of Wight Citizens Association and the Carrollton Civic League are sponsoring a community workshop, "Who Should Protect Our School Children," at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 22 at the Smithfield Center, 220 N. Church St., Smithfield. The public is encouraged to invited to participate.

Marshall and School Superintendent Katrise Perera are among the panel participants answering questions.
